Classification: Benzodiazepine

Indications: Treats anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, anxiety, and insomnia. Also used to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

Mechanism of Action: Acts as a central nervous system depressant, enhancing the effects of GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate sleep and relaxation.

Common Side Effects: Drowsiness, dizziness, light-headedness, confusion, memory impairment, headache, fatigue, and increased appetite.

Precautions: May cause dependence and withdrawal symptoms when stopped suddenly. Not recommended for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use with caution in patients with a history of substance abuse or liver disease.

Dosage: Available in tablet form in strengths of 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, and 2mg. The recommended starting dose is 0.25-0.5mg taken 2-3 times a day.
